The Walking Dead Finale

Spoiler Alert!

Turn back now if you don’t want spoilers. I’m not sure why you’d be here if you didn’t already see The Walking Dead season finale or unless you wanted to know what happened. None the less, you’ve been warned.

Last Day On Earth

First off, what a fitting title. For at least one of the characters that is. We don’t know who but there are certainly going to be a wide range of speculations in the next few days. Who do you think it was at the end there?

Who died?

My money would be on Abraham or Eugene just the way the episode hinted at it. Then again you have to remember these directors are tricky. What would be more tricky than just following the comic book? That’s right, it could be Glen after all. It would be pretty messed up for Negan to kill Glen in front of Maggie right when she’s about to have a baby or having complications. Then again it would be even more messed up if he killed Maggie since she’s pregnant. I’m interested to see what other people think so comment at the bottom in the discussion section or on Facebook / Twitter.

Re-watching the last part of the episode I find the wording Negan uses very interesting. He says he doesn’t want to kill any of them. He also goes on to say that he’s “gonna beat the holy hell out of one of you.” Which, technically doesn’t mean the person will be killed. Definitely messed up pretty well. Lucille is wrapped in barbed wire and he does give two good wacks to someones head. It would be safe to assume the person dies but again, these writers / directors are tricky.

We definitely know it’s not Carl or Rick because Negan said that if anyone moves or screams to “cut out the boys other eye and feed it to his father.”

The Episode

I’ve been hearing and reading a lot of complaints about the episode so far. Even though it was an hour and a half long it seems like nothing really happens. It’s a lot of back and forth and the crew just slowly going between roadblocks. The entire episode could easily been shown in 20 – 30 minutes.

The parts with Carol just seemed like filler at that point. I would have much rather seen a fully fleshed out episode just about the struggle she’s going through instead of the snippets in the finale.

Walking Dead Finale – Final Thoughts

All in all I’m pleased with the way the finale ended. I like that we don’t know who it was at the end. The way it was described on The Talking Dead afterwards was perfect. This is the end of one story and when it starts up again it will be the beginning of a new story.

I also really like how Negan was brought in and the directors thoughts about him. If we would have seen Negans back story from the beginning we might view rick and his people as the bad guys just as we view The Saviors now.

This was a great season, not only each individual episode but the season in its entirety. That being said I feel like the season finale was very fitting and I don’t think I would have done much differently.

I have a lot more thoughts but it would take too long to write / read so start a discussion below and we’ll talk about it!

Update / Edit

Due to a lot of personal discussions and requests I’ve decided to add some more information to this article. Originally I did not want this to be too long but if the requests are there then we must appease the masses .

A lot of fans have made the point that the ending was not fitting and that it should not have ended on a cliffhanger. I’ve thought about this a lot now and I’m inclined to agree. Since there are a lot of fanatical fans for the show and because of news coverage we might find out who is not on set for the next seasons filming. This will reveal who has died and will take away from the production value as well as emotional investment that fans have in the story as it has done before. That is just unfair to the audience. Hopefully they figure out a way to account for this somehow.

More Observations

Where are all the women in The Saviors? I don’t remember seeing any at the complex that Rick and the others ambushed. Sure, some showed up afterwards but that was 2 and not a significant amount like the main cast.

None of the road ambushes had women. There may have been one or two shooting guns by the chained walkers but that’s it. Definitely none were seen at the final ambush in the woods. This leads me to believe that they are kept somewhere. A group of guys like The Saviors are going to want women around for obvious non chivalrous purposes. They’re probably at a camp somewhere as slaves.

Walking Dead Finale Maggie

All of that leads me to believe that Negan probably did not kill any of the women in the group at the end. Although Maggie appears to be quite sick and with what Negan doesn’t know. For all he knows she’s been bitten and that’s why she looks the way she does. It would be smart of him to kill her off since he keeps mentioning that he wants them to work for him. Why would he want a sick person who is going to take up resources? He wouldn’t.

Negan also saw Glen speak out for Maggie so he knows that there is an emotional connection there from at least one person. Safe to assume that others would feel the same way. It would surely leave a lasting imprint on the group if Maggie was killed, especially by a guy with a barbed wire wrapped baseball bat.
